I get anxious after a night of drinking, and I'm glad he brought that up. Once I realized what the cause was I was able to control it much better mainly by cutting back on drinking and just coming to terms on what exactly was going on. I started having them around when the pandemic started because I started drinking beer a lot more often. Doing much better now though, still room for improvement though.

In the film Joker, though it's unclear as to whether Penny Fleck adopted Arthur (after all, she was demonstrably dishonest), or she was, in fact, Arthur's biological mother (having lied about the adoption), I think it can be safely assumed that Penny was not Arthur's biological mother. That, being the case, there is likely no genetic component (at least in relation to Penny) to his mental condition.

As a girl with high-functioning autism, sometimes I find myself questioning if I even have autism cause I feel just that high-functioning and because I don't fit into a lot of the most common symptoms of ASD. But I have to remind myself that the reason I don't fit the mold very well is because I'm a girl and not a lot of research has been done on girls with ASD (though even then, I sometimes don't feel I even fit in with women with ASD) and that I've also put in a lot of effort to try to understand people and myself better. I thoroughly understand and realize that I *do* want and like relationships, I just sometimes struggle with conversation, understanding or calming my own emotions, and sensitivity to a lot of noise. I also have driving anxiety which I think is at least somewhat related to my autism as I like having a routine and trying new things is hard for me. ESPECIALLY when it comes to things my friends already understand. For example, if they've been playing a video game for a while and I would just be starting, I would feel like I would be a burden to teach and get anxious about it. Any time I've been able to push passed or ignore that anxiety though, I end up having a lot of fun or gain confidence in doing that thing. This past summer, I wanted to go to the family lake house as I felt I was missing out. Eventually, I got up the courage and told my mom I was coming. It was only about a 20 minute drive and I've been on it many times in the passenger seat. The last time I went I tried to pay attention to how the roads were/what the basic route looked like and before leaving, I looked again on Google maps to reassure myself. During the drive, I felt nervous but not "I'm about to have a panic attack" nervous more just uncomfortable. My dad got the road name wrong so I ended up in some trailer park nearby and that made me nervous but then my dad came to show me the rest of the way and I was fine! I did it! I actually drove somewhere new of my own volition! And now I think I'll be comfortable enough to do it again so long as I look over Google maps and have a GPS going. Later in the video he talks about how saying "It's a medication problem" or "they didn't take their medication" can be very demeaning and, as someone whose father had done that multiple times when I was depressed, he's right, it feels terrible. It made me more depressed any time he said that and made me want to just stop taking the medicine if it made me seem so different. I didn't want to be seen as different. I wanted to be myself. I never actually did stop though, I just regularly forgot to take it on the weekends and my mom was a great support for me. Honestly, at the time, I was only somewhat aware that it was an anti-depressant that I was taking. Like, I knew I was depressed and I realized it was related to that but for some reason it never really clicked. So it took it at the same time as my ADHD medicine. Which I didn't usually take on weekends and completely forgot about during the summer. I felt better (at the time) by that summer though so it was fine for a while. I needed them again later though.

My depression during my teenage years was mostly characterized by irritability, just like you said. Now I'm less irritable but I have no motivation at all. I move out of my dorm room tomorrow and I have not been able to pack up my stuff. I have to wait for my family to help me because I can't handle doing it by myself. Partially because it's overwhelming but also just because my depressed brain would much rather be watching this video and laying in bed than cleaning and packing.

I hide my mental illnesses, as when people find out they assume every display of emotion means a breakdown is on the way. IF I tell people, I then need to go even further out of my way to hide my emotions, or risk people seeing me as out of control. Normal displays of emotions need to be even more suppressed than before I tell them, or else they feel uncomfortable. My best friends are also in the mental health world, and they understand having to stuff their emotions for the comfort of neurotypical people, out of fear of being judged, ignored, or worse. This does not mean neurotypical people are bad, in the same way people with mental illnesses are not bad. Badness or wrongness is not judged by a person's chemical makeup, but in their actions-but if we are getting further in, we have to take into account the internal and external contexts dictating that person's control over their actions. FURTHER, (last thing I promise), it is not a switch, control and fault. It's a spectrum. Thank you for listening to my personal experience TED talk.

Mental illness and violence are definitely linked. People with schizophrenia don't hurt others but they sure hurt themselves. People with major anger problems are quick to hurt and kill others. Mentally healthy people aren't the ones who hurt others intentionally unless it's self defense. Stop making mental illness seem harmless and clean because it's not.

ABA is abusive and disgusting. Please do not support it. It teaches autistics that there is something wrong with them when that is not true. It teaches them to hate themselves. It suppresses their natural behaviors which causes anxiety. It is essentially forced masking. There is nothing wrong with stimming or having special interests or not making eye contact. The idea that there is is purely a social thing. Autistics are not wrong. We are different.
